The Washoe County Public Administrator is an elected Officer entrusted to oversee the administration of the estates of persons deceased in Washoe County who have no qualified person willing or able to administer. Our role is strictly administrative: we search for and identify the heirs, we secure property, protect assets from loss, and navigate the probate process with the Court to ensure every resident’s legacy is handled with professional care.
While many of the cases in the Public Administrators office go through the entire Court probate process, the vast majority of the cases handled are small estates consisting of under $25,000 and are reported to the Court on an Affidavit of Public Administrator.
Providing for your family through estate planning is a vital step for every resident. However, because our office is funded by the county to perform the specific administrative duties outlined in NRS 253, we must dedicate our resources entirely to those mandated services.
While we are here to guide you through the functions of our office, we cannot provide legal counsel. To remain a neutral, third-party representative for the Court, we must maintain clear boundaries. If you need help with a will or trust, we are always happy to point you toward resources like the State Bar of Nevada
or the "Lawyer in the Library" program, which are better equipped to provide that specialized assistance.
The Legal Limit: Under NRS 7.285, our office is prohibited from practicing law or providing legal planning services.
Our work often begins with on-site investigations. When we secure a residence, we aren't just looking for assets; we are actively removing hazards. In many cases, this includes the safe removal of drugs and weapons from unsecured properties. This "unseen" part of our job is a critical service that helps keep Washoe County neighborhoods safe for everyone.
The Public Administrator’s office is a highly technical department governed by complex state statutes. Managing tax filings, creditor claims, and court accounting requires a deep understanding of the law. With over 20 years of experience specifically in this office, Nicole has the proven competence to ensure that every case is handled in 100% compliance with the law, avoiding the costly delays that can come from inexperience.
To protect the integrity of the office and maintain public trust, we do not make recommendations to specific private businesses or law firms. We believe in absolute transparency and neutrality, providing our community with access to unbiased public resources rather than favoring private entities.
